At the opening ceremony of the "Spirit of Fire" the audience was able to see an amazing light and music performance: beautiful ballerinas turned up, the stage curtain fell presenting the union of theatre and cinema, and the first cinematic works with the most famous actor of the silent screen, Charlie Chaplin, showed. Ballerinas started their light dance to the accompaniment of violin and button accordion. What was happening on the stage fascinated everyone in the hall, immersed in the amazing atmosphere of classical Russian theatre and old silent cinema. Completely unnoticed, the music changed, the stage curtain was raised, and the big screen showed footage of previous film festivals.
Then the hosts came on the stage welcoming the audience in 5 languages: Russian, English, French, German and Portuguese. They told the unique story of the stage curtain. Its authors are the great Russian scene designer Aleksandr Golovin and the outstanding director-reformer of the entire world stage Vsevolod Meyerhold. For the first time, this curtain was shown on the last day of the existence of Tsarist Russia. It so historically happened that in the days of the February Revolution in Russia, the world first saw a silent movie and great Charlie Chaplin. And it is no coincidence that at the opening of the XVII International Film Festival this stage curtain was presented, it was a symbol of renewal and of a new era when cinema and theatre became united. And it was the union of cinema and theatre that became the keynote of the Festival this year.
