Charlie Chaplin and Nina Kovalenskaya are on the poster of XVII IDFF "Spirit of Fire"

Two iconic figures of theatre and cinema are on this year's poster of XVII IDFF "Spirit of Fire"!

Its layout features an American and English actor, a universal master of cinema, the creator of one of the most famous images of world cinema Charlie Chaplin and Russian actress of the Imperial Theatre Nina Kovalenskaya.

This "neighbourhood" has a reason behind it. According to the concept of this Festival, its theme is "Theatre and Cinema". And 2019 is declared the Year of Theatre in Russia.

It is worth reminding that Charlie Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential people in the era of silent cinema and received the honorary award "Oscar" in 1972 "for invaluable contribution to the cinema becoming art in this century".

A theatre actress of the Imperial Theatre Nina Kovalenskaya played the role of Nina Arbenina in the play "Masquerade" of one of the best theatre artists Aleksandr Golovin and one of the most famous theatre directors Vsevolod Meyerhold. Later she emigrated to the States and worked there on the radio in San Francisco. Kovalenskaya died 25 years ago at the age of 104. The last actress of the Imperial Alexandrinsky Theatre never forgot about "Masquerade".

This performance was one of the most expensive and pretentious. It was even prepared for almost 10 years from 1908 to 1917. The premiere was slated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lermontov in 1914, but the First World War broke out.

Golovin made for "Masquerade" about 4 thousand sketches. Meyerhold for 6 years worked with actors, drew mise-en-scenes on paper.

The premiere took place just on the day of the February Revolution on February 25, 1917, and became a farewell performance of the Imperial Alexandrinsky Theatre.

It existed on the stage for a quarter of a century.

Unique posters of the "Spirit of Fire" become a surprise for guests and a bright decoration of the Festival every year. It is to be recalled that last year the characters of the film "Gone With the Wind" were on the poster, symbolizing the theme of the 16th Festival - "Films About Love".
