A lyrical confession of a school principal, an experienced teacher, who, observing the daily life of the school, tries to examine today's complex problems of education. Tolerant and respectful of the pupil's talent, he comes into conflict with the school head teacher, who reproaches him for liberalism and connivance. Their dispute is complicated by the fact that they are both devoted to their profession.

The action takes place in the USSR in the 1960’s when Fidel Castro was seen as a hero and youth idol. The teenager Kolya is madly in love with his music teacher. His father escaped from the city stealing rare coins from the museum and the mother went to jail instead of him. When his terminally ill father returns home Kolya wants to arrange his meeting with his imprisoned mother at any cost. He believes he has found the perfect moment during a concert by his beloved teacher to celebrate Fidel Castro’s visit to Gatchina.

Having completed his military service, the protagonist decides to test himself in the hostile Far North and leaves his native village to work at a remote construction site. Trials are ready for him. Striving to remain honest and decent he makes one mistake after another. He seems almost ready to give up.
